Safety Precautions For Handling Industrial LPG Gas Cylinder

LPG gas is used in every commercial and industrial sector such as construction sites, warehouses, hotels, restaurants, etc. The safety of the workers and the people associated with the sectors is very important and needs proper safety precautions while using LPG cylinders. The public or private gas agency that supplies gas cylinders to various industries is responsible for ensuring proper safety measures during any scary incident. The most common problem is gas leakage that occurs due to improper handling of LPG cylinders, preventing what is extremely necessary.

LPG gas is widely used in several industries due to its utility, advantages over other fuels, eco-friendliness, etc. But because of its inflammability and need for highly pressured storage, LPG is also regarded as one of the most dangerous fuels to utilise. The accidents occur due to negligence and careless handling or storing of these LPG cylinders in storage rooms. They must be transported and stored maintaining some precautions and fulfilling criteria when in use in respective industries.

Companies need to give proper training to their workers regarding the usage of LPG cylinders which is accompanied by the gas agencies associated. Let’s read about some of the unavoidable safety measures to follow while handling, storing, and transporting gas cylinders.

Store Cylinders in a Well-Ventilated Space

It is important to store the cylinders in a well-ventilated and cooled area where the flow of air is good. The area should be away from any heat exposure or sunlight. There shouldn’t be any flammable material inside the storage room. Proper ventilation is required for the safe dispersal of chemicals, gas, fumes, vapours, etc.

Keep the Cylinder in Upright Position

The positioning of the gas cylinders is important when stored inside a storage room. The cylinder must be kept vertically upright to reduce gas leakage or any other accident. The cylinders stored inside a room might fall and roll. Straps and chocks must be used to prevent in rolling of cylinders. The valve must be well-tightened when moving the cylinders from one place to the other.

Get the Workers Well-Trained

When you are choosing a private gas agency, it is important that you ask your agency to properly train your workers to control any mishap happening in the location. During gas leakage or cylinder blast, injuries can happen but the workers must be well-trained to take safety precautions before stepping into the working area. The use of fire alarms, fire extinguishers and sand is important during any scary accident and the workers and the staff must know how to use them.

Inspect the Cylinders Before Use

When opting for a gas agency, check the cylinder quality before taking supplies from the chosen gas agency. The agency will provide operating instructions regarding the quality and nature of the cylinder. Read the cylinder label and never identify the cylinder depending on the colour of the cylinder. The valve must be properly capped when the delivery is taken from the supplier. Be cautious of the cylinders which show signs of impact, decoloration, and leakage.

Use Appropriate Transportation Vehicle

The transportation of cylinders should be smooth and safe. The vehicle must be open and have proper ventilation. Unload the cylinders upon arrival at the location and use forklift trucks or cylinder trolleys to safely move the cylinder in the location. In case of toppling, hold the cylinder from its neck with both hands.

Conclusion

It is important to safely handle the cylinder, although the properties are different for different gases. The gas agency suitable for your industry must have well-trained supervisors and the certifications must be verified which guarantees the quality of the cylinders. It is important to ensure the safety of your workers during any untoward situation.
